Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, by well-known as Mahatma Gandhi, all over the world, is considered as a Father of India. He believed strongly in Ahimsa, which led to India's independence and inspired other leaders for civil rights. Way before he was born, India became one of the British colonies. Mogul rulers gave valuable trading rights. Life in India was not fair. M. K. Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869 in the city of Porbander, India to Karamchand and Putlibai Gandhi. Karamchand was minister to the maharaja of Porbander only because made him. Putlibai, Karamchand, Karamchand five brothers, their wives, and numerous children and grandchildren lived cramped together in a 3 story house. When Mohandas was thirteen years old, he got married to Kasturbai Makanji. When he was nineteen he went to England to study law leaving back his wife and a year son Harilal. He returns to India in 1891 and his second son, Manilal, was born. Then from 1893-1915 he lives in South Africa and practices what he learned in England. In 1896 his third son, Ramdas, is born and three years later his fourth and last son, Devdas, is born. In 1908 he gives up law practice and two years later, he establishes Tolstoy Farm. In 1915 he returns to India and becomes India's political leader until 1920. In 1930 he led the Salt March which was a 241 mile march. He did this because of the high British taxes. He said "Why should we pay for what's grown in our country?" Thousands of marchers were imprisoned. In 1932 he fasted to protest the British colonial rule. He did this many times and from 1942-1944 he was jailed for being the head of a freedom group which he formed. Unfortunately, Kasturbai died the year he came out of prison. But soon good fortune befell India. In 1946 Britain offers India independence and a year later India becomes it's own country. But from 1947-1948, bad luck returned. The Hindu-Muslim Partition riots started. Gandhi said it should be sorted out with non-violence. Some people didn't agree with him and on January 30, 1948 he was assassinated. Even with the partition of India and Pakistan, India has large population of Muslims and Hindu-Muslim live together like brothers till today and forever.
